 June Activities in Room 130

Reading

This month in reading, we are continuing our work in Orton-Gillingham.  The goal of this program is to get students to know and understand the 'rules' for letter sounds.  By knowing and understanding, rather than memorizing, students are better equipped to read and write.

Ways to help your child with reading:

  • Read the stories that come home every day for review.  These stories should be saved to read over and over again.
  • Practice spelling any of the words in those stories.  (Any of those words could be on the spelling test.)
  • While driving in the car, ask your child to look for street signs/billboards that begin with or contain certain letters.
  • Help your child to read any invitations, thank you cards, or notes you receive.  Show them how reading is very important.

Math

This month in math we will be focusing on measurement.  Our goals for math are to learn how to measure length, weight, capacity, and temperature and learn to choose which measurement tool to use.

Ways to help your child with math:

  • Practice the worksheets that come home daily.
  • Bake some cookies together or whip up a favorite recipe.  Have your child measure the ingredients, comparing the sizes of the bowls and measuring cups you use.
  • Go on a measuring 'treasure hunt'.  Make a paper clip train as long as you would like.  Have your child try to find as many objects as they can that are about that long.
  • There are other great ideas for math at home on www.parent.mathsurf.com

Science/Health

This month in science, we are going to discuss the importance of Father's Day and Flag Day.  We will also be talking about summer safety and stranger danger.

Ways to help your child with science/health:

  • Encourage your child to show citizenship by honoring our flag.
  • Discuss the importance of never talking to strangers with your child.  It is important that they hear it, not only at school, but at home as well.

Writing

In writing, we have been working on using capitals, spaces, and punctuation for all sentences.  We have also been working on starting a story with a topic sentence, adding details to make our story interesting, and ending with a feeling sentence.  Students that do all of these things well are awarded with a "Quality Work Award".  For the month of May our award winners were:

        MyKayla        Rachel        Kialeigh

Aaron        Skyler        Tanner     Haili
