OG Rules Book 2

Orton-Gillingham Rules (Book 2)

1. sl- a consonant blend

2. /v/ v+e words ending with the /v/ are followed by an “e”. English words never end with a v. The e sometimes has more than one job.

3. L (ll) - double L after a short vowel at the end of a one syllable word

4. oo is a vowel pair. In this session it makes its long sound and is marked with a macron.

5. sk- sk must be used before e, i, and y; it may be used before a, o, u

6. cr- r blend (it does NOT say ker!!!!)

7. ou is a vowel pair. It makes the vowel sound as in out.

8. Th (voiced) - found at the beginning of words. The sound of this th causes the vocal cords to vibrate.

9. dr- a consonant blend

10. qu- where ever you see a q you will always see a u. Q is never found alone.

11. gr- a consonant blend

12. –nd- end blend

13. fr- consonant blend

14. sn- consonant blend

15. all- a rime that you add onset to. L follows the doubling rule after a short vowel, but it changes the sound of the short a to the sound of a short o.

16. gl, fl- consonant blends

17. cl- consonant blend

18. sc /sk/- is a consonant blend. It can only used before a, o, and u

19. pr- consonant blend

20. sm- consonant blend

21. ow /o/ is a vowel pair. It is the most common spelling choice for the long o sound and at the end of a word.

22. –mp- end consonant blend

23. –nt- end consonant blend

24. y /i/ makes the sound of a long I in an open accented syllable. Every word has an accented syllable; therefore, one syllable words will be accented and y will make the sound of a long I in a one syllable word.

25. –ed /t/- ed is an inflectional ending that changes the form of the verb but doesn’t change the part of speech. It will make the sound of t when it follows an unvoiced consonant.

26. –ed /t/ when a closed accented syllable with the vc pattern comes at the end of a word, the final consonant is doubled to preserve the short sound of the vowel in a base word, when an inflectional ending that starts with a vowel is added. This is called the geminate rule.

27. bl- consonant blend

28. ai is a vowel pair. It is never found at the end of a word. It makes the sound of a long a

29. oa is a vowel pair. It will generally be found in one syllable words

30. ed /d/- added “ed” to base words to form the past tense of verbs. It will make the /d/ after voiced consonants and vowels (all vowels are voiced) when ed is followed by vowel pairs and more than one consonant sound, the ed is simply added to the base word.

31. ed /d/- is an inflectional ending that means the action already happened. It indicates past tense. When the base word ends in a vc, closed syllable, pattern, double the final consonants before adding “-ed”.

32. or- an r controlled vowel

33. oy is a vowel pair. The two vowels produce a sliding sound called a diphthong. Oy is always found at the end of a word or a syllable.

34. When vowel pairs are found at the end of words an s is added to form plurals and present tense verbs. Notice that because vowels are voiced, the s makes /z/.

35. ed makes the /ed/ and forms another syllable.

36. wa /waw/- “w” controls the sound of “a” and makes the -/aw/ or the sound of short o

37. ea /e/ is a vowel pair. It is the second choice for the long e sound in the middle of word. It can be found in any part of a word.

38. F (ff) is doubled after a short vowel, at the end of a one syllable word

39. dge is always found after a short vowel

40. th (unvoiced) - th is an inter-dental sound formed between the teeth
