Intentional Curriculum Design

Based on research into the work of Dr. Larry Ainsworth and Heidi Hayes Jacobs, we have developed a five year district plan for intentional curriculum design. This plan is included below as it was presented to our Board of Education and our community on December 5, 2007.

In this plan, we will critically evaluate why we're doing what we're doing with our instructional time. We will develop an intentional plan for curriculum so that the quality of each student's learning does not depend entirely on what his individual teachers decide to emphasize. Instead our goal will be to develop a K-12 curriculum that is developed by our teachers and will meet and exceed the NYS standards and the standards of our system.

Our leadership absolutely must be committed to sustain such long term, deep change and we are. We understand that this will be hard work for our teachers and administrators. We believe that this intentional design of our curriculum is so important that we will find ways to support our teachers in getting it done.

The quality of the education that our children receive is good. Teachers are extremely well intended and they do their very best to figure it out, to make good decisions. We need to move to a district wide, systematic and planned approach to the development of our curriculum. Teachers will work together with administrators to make coordinated, conscious decisions about what we're teaching when, and to whom. Coupled with our literacy initiative and our increase in staff development, the quality of the education our children receive will be excellent.
